The Bistro Nykvarn Complete Project

When Bistro Nykvarn opened the doors to its new restaurant, the vision was clear from the start. The ambition was to create “Nykvarn's new living room”, a place where people can meet over well-prepared food, local ingredients, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The philosophy is based on local, seasonal, and handmade, with a strong focus on locally sourced ingredients and collaborations with local suppliers.

For us at PS Skylt & Inredning, this became one of the most comprehensive and complete projects we have ever undertaken. A project where we have been involved from a very early stage and where we have been responsible for everything from graphic profile and brand development to the full contract for the pergola, outdoor dining area, signage, and the entire interior design concept. From the initial idea and sketch to final production and assembly, we have been part of the entire journey.

It has been an incredibly instructive, creative, and rewarding project that we are immensely proud of in every detail.

The project began with our graphic design and concept development department being commissioned to create Bistro Nykvarn's visual identity from scratch. A solid effort where our Art Director developed the logo, symbols, colour palette, and typography with the goal of reflecting the feeling the client wanted to convey. Playful, warm, and welcoming, yet modern and self-assured.

The result was a graphic profile that today permeates the entire business and serves as the common thread through everything from signage and interior design to menus and the overall experience of the restaurant.

The outdoor environment has been a central part of the project, and the entire exterior area is divided into two distinct zones.

The first part consists of a large pergola that functions as a natural extension of the restaurant's serving area. The Pergola Opera model was chosen here, a modern and exclusive pergola with a sleek design and an adjustable louvered roof, also known as a hard top. The construction makes it possible to enjoy the sun on warm days while the durable louvres can be easily adjusted to create shade or protection from rain and snow with the touch of a button.

One of the great advantages of the adjustable louvered roof is its ability to withstand snow loads, making the pergola usable all year round. Together with infrared heating and glass partitions, a comfortable and protected environment is created regardless of the season. The result is an area that not only physically enlarges the restaurant but also extends the experience far beyond the summer months.

Outside the pergola, the restaurant's open-air outdoor dining area was created, a place to enjoy long summer days and evenings. Here, we have developed the entire furnishing concept with a focus on both function and atmosphere. Furniture that withstands weather and wind is combined with various types of seating for dinner, lounging, and bar-style seating. Everything meticulously planned to create a lively and inviting environment where guests want to stay longer.

As part of the overall assignment, we also developed the entire signage concept for Bistro Nykvarn. The solution includes a larger entrance sign in the form of a portal and two flag signs placed on the building's corners.

The facade sign serves as a clear and welcoming entrance to the outdoor dining area while making the restaurant visible to passers-by. The portal is designed as an illuminated sign in Profile 6 with illuminated fronts where the colour choices follow Bistro Nykvarn's graphic profile. To create a natural architectural whole, the portal was painted in the same colour as the property's other wrought iron details, fences, and pergola. The result is an installation that feels like an integral part of the building rather than something added afterwards.

The two flag signs were also meticulously developed to harmonise with the overall concept. The signs are painted in a profile colour on the depth, while the fronts consist of fluted acrylic with the restaurant's logo. This combination gives an exclusive look with both depth and character.

Internally, we have developed and supplied the entire interior design concept, both inside the pergola and within the restaurant itself. Here, every detail has been carefully chosen to create the right feeling and atmosphere.

Through carefully composed material choices, furniture, bespoke solutions, plants, lighting, and décor, we have created an environment where all parts work together. The goal has been to build a holistic experience where interior, exterior, graphic profile, and signage speak the same language.

It is precisely the interplay between all these components that together create what is today Bistro Nykvarn.

This project is clear proof of how strong the result becomes when one is involved early in the process and when the same actor is responsible for several parts of the whole. When design, production, interior design, and signage are developed in parallel, a natural common thread is created throughout the entire experience, from the first impression outside the restaurant to the feeling the guest takes away from it.
